Albert Einstein This unrivalled modern physicist and humanist is justly famous: an Albert Einstein quote on a wide variety of issues is often heard. Born in Germany in 1879 of Jewish heritage, his family moved to Italy when he was a small boy and later to Switzerland when he was 10. Albert was not considered to be enormously intelligent as a child; it was not until he was a young adult that his genius began to become apparent. He took Swiss citizenship and ultimately obtained his doctor’s degree there in 1905 when he was 26.

He became a German citizen in 1914 and remained in Berlin until 1933 when he renounced his citizenship for political reasons and emigrated to America to take the position of Professor of Theoretical Physics at Princeton*. He accepted United States citizenship in 1940 and retired in 1945.

Einstein’s special and general theories of relativity are still regarded as the most satisfactory model of the large-scale universe that we have; he radically transformed our understanding of the universe, and was a major contributor to quantum theory. As an ardent humanist, he took an active and outspoken stance on significant political and social issues and was an active leader of the international anti-war movement and supported conscientious objection. As a committed Jew, he advocated a distinctive moral role for the Jewish people.

He married twice, and had three children with his first wife.

Einstein died in 1955, in Princeton, New Jersey.

“These thoughts did not come in any verbal formulation. I rarely think in words at all. A thought comes, and I may try to express it in words afterward”.
