Well-Known Quotes by Unknown Authors

Discovering Ancient Schroll Where do word archaeologists find the declarations of the unknown?
"Where not?" might be a fairer question.

In Michael Erard's story, The Definition of a Poem, Oliver discovers hoards of poems in a dumpster, signed by someone with the initials of H.T.  Mr. Erard so eloquently writes, "Oliver had rescued beautiful things adrift in the world.  When that happens, you can't throw them back.  You lay claim to them, and they to you, and therein lies the tale."

Unknown, but not Forgotten

The work of unknown authors is found on crumpled cocktail napkins; in dusty attics; cradled among photos of nameless faces; in love letters to secret objects of affection; or as engravings on the crypts of the ancient dead.

The authors of these quotes may be unknown, but surely the truths that lie within their words are not only accepted, but celebrated.

A Forever Ending

In the story, Oliver did find the person with the initials of H.T.  Oliver didn't disclose the fact that he had found the man's words, but instead thought to himself, "...it wasn't a resurrection at all, because he'd never been gone."

I can't help but associate the immortal words that lie here with that sentiment.  No matter the fate of these faceless authors, their words will never be gone.
